LA REINE DU CHAOS
ANALOG CHAOTIC RHYTHMIC SYNTHESIZER
LA REINE DU CHAOS is a full analog synthesizer voice made the SOVAGE way! The main idea navigates around the concept of CHAOS, delivering unpredictable unique tones and rhythmic patterns with constant movement within the module. This is achieved through intensive internal modulation routing, composed of two envelope generators and two LFOs, all equipped with their own outputs. The LFOs can also be turned into oscillators and linked to the main 1V/oct input with a flick of a switch or by their respective FM inputs, transforming LA REINE DU CHAOS into a 3 oscillator cross-FM monster that sounds and feels like an entire gang of modules!
If you are trying to control the chaos, the LFOs can also be synced to the 1V/oct input and reset by a trig or a gate. However, instead of resetting their cycle on the positive or negative, they are recycled after a little fast attack and decayed shape when triggered, perfect for rhythmic composition!
Ironically, despite its chaotic concept, LA REINE DU CHAOS is pretty stable. The main oscillator can track over at least six octaves and can deliver classic tones if needed, even without any standard waveforms. But trust me, you won't! You'll immediately start to turn that big ALTERATION knob and dive into the six analog waveform banks: RIDGE, ODD, and SURGE in FULL or LIMITED mode. Crank up the WAVE CLIPPING, add some modulation here and there… It's inevitable, and you're right because all the fun starts here!
A function that can sometimes seem to do a little often impacts another one and so on. Whether you are randomly turning knobs or flipping switches chaotically, or whether you are trying to control this chaos, you will always design unique sounds!
All by itself, aside from being a synthesizer voice, LA REINE DU CHAOS can be the center of many patches as it is packed with different functions that can be used independently with their own inputs and outputs capabilities.
Embrace the power of the CHAOS!

ATTACK: You already know!
-
DECAY: Of course you know!
-
MODE (Switch): Changes EG2’s behavior
-
LFO: Bipolar looping mode.
-
AD: Classic and sharp AD.
-
ASR: Adds a sustain stage between ATTACK and DECAY as long as you hold a note (gate).
-
FREQ, MOD 1 and 2:
-
Frequency control for the respective modulation source mod 1 or 2.
-
MOD 1 and 2 are two fully analog independent triangle LFOs that can be turned into oscillator mode.
MODE:
-
Changes the behavior of the respective modulation, 1 or 2.
-
FREE / TRACK: In FREE mode, the LFO cycles at the speed you choose by turning the FREQ knob. When TRACK is enabled, the selected modulator will additionally be synced with the incoming 1V/OCT.
-
OSC / LFO: This switch turns the selected MOD into an LFO or an oscillator (OSC).
-
FINE:
-
Fine adjustment of the VCO’s pitch.
EXPO.FM / MOD 2:
-
Adjusts the depth of MOD 2 for exponential frequency modulation. Attenuator for the IN EXPO. input (Exponential FM).
COARSE:
-
Adjusts the VCO’s pitch.
EG2 PITCH DEPTH:
-
Adjusts the depth of EG 2 (AD) for voltage control of the VCO's pitch.
VCA BIAS:
-
Closes or opens the VCA, adjusting the amount of level going out of the main output. 5V in mid position, 10v at max!
EG 1 AMP DEPTH:
-
Adjusts the depth of MOD1 (ADSR) for voltage control of the main output VCA.
CV VCA BIAS:
-
Adjusts the depth of the selected modulation you are sending for voltage control of the VCA.
SWITCH: MOD 1/EG 2:
-
Choose between two sources of modulation to voltage control the VCA: MOD 1, the first LFO, or EG 2, the AD.
WAVE CLIPPING:
-
Adjusts the amount of the hard clipping shape going into the VCO’s main output circuitry.
CLIPPING WIDTH:
-
Changes the width of the hard clipping shape from thin to thick.
POLARITY switch:
-
Switches the polarity of the clipping wave from 0° to 180°.
MOD 2 / CV WAVE CLIPPING:
-
Adjusts the depth of MOD 2 for voltage control of WAVE CLIPPING. Attenuator for the IN CV CLIPPING WAVE input.
MOD 1 / CV CLIPPING WIDTH:
-
Adjusts the depth of MOD 1 for voltage control of CLIPPING WIDTH. Attenuator for the IN CV CLIPPING WIDTH input.
ALTERATION:
-
The ALTERATION function changes the power and shape of the waveform in unconventional and unpredictable ways. Turning it to the right degrades the original waveform, while turning it to the left makes it stronger and “cleaner.” This function interacts significantly with other functions, especially the CLIPPING and LIMITED waveforms.
NORMAL / LIMITED:
-
Selector between two sets of analog waveforms. The limited set contains less negative voltage information and loves to be combined with the WAVE CLIPPING function.
RIDGE, ODD AND SURGE:
-
Choose between three distinct waveforms going into the main OUT (VCA). These waveforms react differently to ALTERATION and CLIPPING and have significantly different tones. Combined with the NORMAL / LIMITED switch, you have a total of six waveforms to start with.
CV ALTER. / MOD2:
-
Attenuverter to adjust the depth of MOD 2 for voltage control of ALTERATION. Attenuverter for the IN CV ALTER.
MOD 1 / LIN.FM:
-
Adjusts the depth of the selected modulation for creating linear frequency modulation. Attenuator for the IN LIN. input (Linear FM).
-
CONNECTIVITY :
INPUTS:
-
GATE: Input for GATE or TRIG of the ADSR (EG1).
-
TRIGATE: Input for TRIG or GATE of the AD/ASR (EG2).
-
PUNCH RESET for MOD 1 AND 2: A trig, gate, or any signal will reset the cycle of the selected LFO by adding a high voltage peak followed by a fast linear decay before starting its cycle again.
-
FM for MOD 1 AND 2: Input for voltage control of the FREQ of the selected modulator. It can also take volts per octave.
-
1V/OCT: Precise input for 1V/oct to chromatically control the pitch of the VCO.
